LONDON — The queen’s dying capability that Prince Harry and Meghan’s teenagers must become Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet — if the royal family sticks to convention.
The exchange in title, in the main an automatic right following the ascension of a new monarch, was thrown into query after Meghan, in an interview with Oprah Winfrey closing year, said that the royal family had mentioned changing the guidelines to deprive Archie of the princely title permanently. She said that the family had decided, whilst she used to be pregnant with Archie, not to furnish him either the title of prince or the designation His Royal Highness and recommended that it was linked to their concerns about the shade of the baby’s skin.



“I suppose even with that conference I’m talking about, whilst I was once pregnant, they said they want to change the conference for Archie,” she said in the interview.
Under rules mounted by means of King George V in 1917, the teenagers and grandchildren of the monarch get hold of titles, however no longer the great-grandchildren. Since Archie, 3, and Lilibet, 1, are grandchildren of the new monarch, King Charles III, they must now acquire the titles of prince and princess.
A spokesman for Harry, who is acknowledged as the Duke of Sussex, and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, did not reply to a request for comment; nor did Buckingham Palace. Charles has long appreciated a slimmed-down monarchy.
Meghan and Harry, who is fifth in line to the throne, stopped the usage of their most specific titles, “His Royal Highness” and “Her Royal Highness,” in 2020 after saying they would no longer be working royals.
